Dragons' Den vs Shark Tank: The Same Show, Really

If Dragons' Den Canada and Shark Tank feel like the same program, that is because they are branches of one format.

The concept began as a Japanese show, The Tigers of Money, then the British Dragons' Den premiered in 2005, and Shark Tank is the American franchise of that same format, which premiered on ABC on August 9, 2009.

What is actually different

The mechanics are near identical: founders name an amount and an equity slice, investors probe the numbers, and offers only count if they meet the ask.

The obvious split is currency and audience. Dragons' Den Canada trades in Canadian dollars on CBC, while Shark Tank deals in US dollars on ABC for a much larger domestic market.

The people who crossed over

Two Canadian dragons, Kevin O'Leary and Robert Herjavec, moved to Shark Tank, which is the clearest link between the two casts.

On the American side, Daymond John and Barbara Corcoran have been sharks since the first season, Lori Greiner joined in the fourth, and Mark Cuban was a fixture from the third season until he departed in May 2025.

Why it matters for a pitch

Because the format is shared, the analysis we run on a Canadian pitch, ask versus equity and the implied valuation, reads the same way you would judge a Shark Tank deal.

The difference is which market the founder is chasing, and that is often the whole story.

Note: This compares the shows at the format level; we do not track individual Shark Tank pitches on this site.
