Robert Herjavec: The Security Founder Who Sat in Both Dens

Robert Herjavec was born in 1962 in Croatia, then part of Yugoslavia, and emigrated to Canada as a child.

He founded BRAK Systems, an integrator of internet security software, and sold it to AT&T Canada in 2000, then founded The Herjavec Group in 2003 to do security work at a larger scale.

The security business

The Herjavec Group grew into one of Canada's larger cybersecurity firms, selling managed security services to large enterprises, and later merged with a United States security company and was rebranded as Cyderes.

It is a business built on recurring contracts rather than one off sales, and that preference for revenue that renews is what he tends to look for in someone else's numbers.

From the Den to the Tank

Herjavec was on the original panel when the Canadian Dragons' Den began on CBC in 2006, and sat at the table for its first six seasons. Those seasons are indexed on this site.

In 2009 he became one of the original investors on the American series Shark Tank and has appeared on it for many years since, which puts him in the small group, alongside Kevin O'Leary, who have done both shows.
